AVETUR is an independent association of tourism related concerns dedicated to protecting the ecological, cultural and historical heritage of Vilcabamba. One of it's main objectives is the implementation of "planned ecotourism" as a means of improving the quality of life for the inhabitants of the valley. By raising the levels of environmental and group awareness among the members and of the community, concrete and realistic environmental and social objectives are being successfully accomplished. Membership is open to local and foreign persons or organizations. Most of the members have a vested interest in the tourist trade, some however are members of the community that simply have an interest in witnessing Vilcabamba truly become once more the "Valley of the Gods".
